(Poly)phenols from wild blueberries may improve vascular function

In a double-blind, randomized, controlled trial, 61 healthy older adults consumed wild blueberry powder (equivalent to 178 g of fresh berries) or a placebo over 12 weeks. The blueberry group showed significant improvements in flow-mediated dilation (FMD), a reduction in systolic blood pressure, and better performance on memory and executive function tests. Polyphenol excretion in urine increased, confirming bioavailability. No changes in cerebral blood flow or gut microbiota were observed. The study suggests that wild blueberries may reduce future cardiovascular risk and support cognitive health in older adults.
