How does a child’s oral microbiome develop?
Shortly after birth, microorganisms colonise the oral mucosa and the tongue. As the milk teeth erupt, additional surfaces are created on which more complex bacterial biofilms can develop.
The oral microbiome changes in response to saliva, diet, tooth eruption, oral hygiene and local immune defences.
A balanced oral flora is an integral part of natural oral health. Frequent exposure to sugar and inadequate biofilm control, on the other hand, can favour acid-producing microorganisms.
The aim of modern paediatric dental care is therefore not the complete elimination of all bacteria, but rather the control of harmful biofilms whilst taking the natural microbial balance into account.
