What role does the mother play in the development of a child’s microbiome?
The mother influences her child’s development even during pregnancy through her diet, metabolic products and immunological factors.
At birth, the child comes into close contact with microorganisms. During a vaginal birth, maternal microorganisms, amongst other things, are transferred. Subsequently, breastfeeding, skin-to-skin contact and the family environment contribute significantly to the development of the child’s microbiome.
The mother is therefore an important early source of microbial and immunological influences. Other caregivers and environmental contacts also play a significant role.
