„Probiotic“ means „for life“.

Probiotics are preparations with viable microorganisms that bring health benefits to humans when ingested in sufficient quantities. (Definition: WHO 2001)

Probiotic preparations (medicines, foods, dietary supplements or cosmetics) have been known and appreciated for a long time, e.g. as probiotic yogurt to build up the intestinal flora. New, however, are oral probiotics, such as BioLactis® (Cumdente Tuebingen), which contain beneficial strains of bacteria, such as lactobacilli and bifidobacteria, that can inhibit caries- and periodontitis-causing bacteria and are effective against bad breath.

Expert tip
Regular use of high-quality oral probiotics such as BioLactis® as a powder or lozenge can restore the balance of healthy oral flora and supports the natural defenses.

How do probiotics work?

Probiotics such as BioLactis® are attributed various mechanisms of action. The main one is the formation of inhibitors or enzymes by the probiotic cultures, which selectively kill the pathogens or inhibit their growth. In addition, the probiotic bacteria produce oxygen derivatives and thus reduce the pathogenic anaerobic pathogens.

Other mechanisms of action include improving the barrier function of the oral mucosa, competing for attachment sites, and activating immune defenses and inhibiting the progression of inflammation. The effectiveness of probiotics as in BioLactis® has been confirmed by scientific research: Under regular intake, over a period of 30 days, plaque formation and gingival inflammation can be significantly reduced. Caries pathogens such as Streptococus mutans and periodontitis lead germs are inhibited.

Compared to continuous use of a chlorhexidine-based antibacterial mouth rinse, the oral probiotic performs significantly better. And this without any side effects.
By the way: A BioLactis® 30 day cure lasts positively for another 2-3 months in a row.

Where can probiotics help?

Probiotics such as BioLactis® support caries and periodontitis prevention and help to effectively prevent these diseases. These can be used in children (from the age of 3) and in adults in addition to the measures of home dental care and, for example, professional dental cleaning at the dentist.

Probiotics such as BioLactis® help to reduce gingivitis and have a lasting effect against bad breath. The balance of a healthy oral flora is restored with the tasty probiotic powder.

Expert tip
It is best to use it daily.
By the way: Taking an oral probiotic is also safe for children from the age of 3.

How and when to use probiotics?

Probiotics such as BioLactis® are available either as a tasty powder in individual sachets or as lozenges. Either the lozenge is allowed to melt slowly on the tongue or, alternatively, the contents of the sachet (powder granules) are sprinkled on the back of the tongue. If you wish, you can also dissolve the powder granules in cold water or fruit juice and rinse the oral cavity thoroughly (at least 1 minute). The aim is to stabilize the probiotic germs on the tongue, from where they can spread throughout the oral cavity and into the gum pockets.

The correct time of application is e.g. after a meal, whereby 2 hours before and after no antibacterial oral care measures (teeth brushing or mouth rinsing) should take place.

Expert tip
Ideal application: Daily, e.g. after lunch.

What side effects should I be aware of?

For whom the intake of probiotics is not recommended?

The oral cavity, as part of the digestive tract, is naturally colonized with a very large amount of different bacteria. Probiotics do not usually cause side effects. There is also no problem of overdosing, as the microbes that are not needed are dissolved and excreted. Nevertheless, people with weakened immune defenses should refrain from using oral probiotics as a precaution.

Not all probiotics are the same!

From the microbe to the probiotic.

In order for one or more microorganisms to be used as probiotics, a variety of properties must be established. First, the exact strains and, if applicable, their interactions must be defined.

Each probiotic formulation behaves differently. In addition to ensuring persistence and ability to multiply over the shelf life in the appropriate formulation, there must be evidence of intact passage of the gastrointestinal tract, non-invasive, non-cancerous and non-pathogenic properties, promotion of normal oral flora, and more.

Probiotics should not be "mixed together" by oneself. Caution is also advised when combining different probiotics.

Expert tip
Each BioLactis® cure has a positive effect for up to 2-3 months.
